Statement regarding animal cruelty
30.04.21
In light of the shocking news and footage released today regarding animal cruelty linked to the Aberdeenshire P&G Sleigh Pig Unit who are contracted to Pilgrim’s Pride, Henson Meats would like to stress that we have no association currently or historically to this organisation.
We have shared their concerns with Quality Meat Scotland and have requested urgent clarification on their position regarding the P&G Sleigh Unit.
Quality Meat Scotland have provided the following statement:
“The animal welfare issue in question is currently under criminal investigation. We cannot provide comment, as this may influence the outcome. Animals must be handled humanely and with respect. Pigs that do not respond to treatment or require emergency euthanasia must be promptly and humanely euthanised by a trained and competent person in line with the Pig Veterinary Society (PVS) Casualty Pig publication.”
As a result of the footage, the farm has been removed from the Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) assurance scheme, which is approved by the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).
We wish to assure our customers that the welfare of animals is of the utmost importance and that we carry out regular audits on our farming partners and producers to ensure good practice is adhered.
Please do not hesitate to contact myself if you should have any further questions or concerns: tstone@henson.co.uk
