Market report: French goat’s cheese shortage

Goats log

In recent years we’ve experienced a huge rise in demand for goat’ cheese – particularly the 1kg log – and it is now a firm favourite on many restaurant menus.

Unfortunately, this increase in demand has come at a time when availability is at the lowest for many years, as many French farmers have stopped producing ewe’s milk altogether, as a result of low farm prices combined with a precautionary cull to combat Q-fever back in 2010.

Our supplier, Eurilait, has advised that we are entering a sustained period of time where supplies will be strictly limited, and – along with all importers of goat’s cheese from France – supplies are being rationed.

Looking forward we will have to accept that demand and supply will create a premium price for goat’s cheese, and the days of it being sold virtually as a loss – leader are unlikely to return
